　　In the photonics industry Germany has a quite strong position. After the presentation of some market numbers we will explain the photonic network in Germany as well as the industrial structure. A key for innovations is the close cooperation between industry and institutes, which also act as the source and support for start-up companies. A short insight to European HORIZON 2020 project will close the presentation.

　　Friedrich Bachmann studied physics at the Technical University Muenchen (TUM) and received his Ph.D. in laser chemistry from the Ludwig-Maximilian University (LMU) in Muenchen, Germany. After a few years research work in laser technology and application (laser chemistry, laser isotope separation) at the Max-Planck-Institute for Quantum Optics he worked for 8½ years at the Corporate Research Division of Siemens AG in the field of laser induced thin film technology. After this he spent 20 years with ROFIN-SINAR Laser GmbH (RSL), a leading manufacturer of industrial high power lasers for materials processing. At RSL he held several functions in R&D, marketing and sales and product management, especially for high power diode lasers. This period was followed by a 2½ year part time employment at LUMERA Laser (LL), a leading manufacturer of ultrashort pulse lasers in a market development function for Eastern Europe and Asia. Besides the above-mentioned work for RSL and LL he acted from 1997 to 2013 as the coordinator and consultant of German national research initiatives, which are funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Since October 2010 Dr. Bachmann runs an independent consulting activity preferably for cooperation in optical technologies between partners from Asia and Germany.
